About Mosaics
First an image is made on MDF board, a non-warping synthetic material. Colors & textures of glass are selected. Each piece of stained glass is cut to form and fit into the design. After all the stained glass is cut and the design is finished, the glass is glued onto the MDF board and allowed to cure over night. Venetian glass tiles are glued to each of the sides of the piece and allowed to cure. After the glass has been secured on the board with the adhesive, it is grouted. Susan uses more than one grout color in her pieces, which is very unusual for this art form. This allows for more dimension and also defines her individual artistic style. Each grout color is mixed in her studio to match the piece—and may never be repeated again. After the piece is grouted, it is allowed to dry and then it is washed with water to remove the excess grout. The back of the piece is painted and hanging hardware is applied. The finished product is a one of a kind, fine art piece, which may have taken as long as 20 hours to complete.
